About

Welcome to Weird Sisters Kitchen. I’m so glad you found us! I’m Susan, the head kitchen witch, and creator of most of the recipes, food tips, and product reviews you’ll find here. Our name is a homage to everyone who’s ever toiled over a bubbling pot, with a nod to William Shakespeare, of course.

I started Weird Sisters Kitchen to share my love of all things foodie along with my updated family recipes and a bit of the magic that comes from working with herbs and flour and butter and heat. Food is love, after all. And what is more magical than that?

I’ve spent a lifetime cooking for others, starting with the most rubbery cakes and the runniest frosting you can imagine. I was nine when I baked that first cake (from a box mix) all by myself. It was truly awful. Nevertheless, I persevered. As with most things, time and practice improved my skills.

My calling to cook for people has presented a series of challenges over the years. It seems there is always someone with special dietary needs – whether a food allergy, diabetes, or vegetarian. So, I’ve learned to adapt many recipes to accommodate those special needs. I will share some of what I’ve learned here.

I am a proponent of buying in season and locally produced ingredients whenever possible. It’s a practice that respects nature and is the least disruptive to the world we live in. Besides, it gives us the chance to support our local communities. And strong communities are the foundation of society.

I also believe in using what’s available. And when your daughter wants concord grape pie for her birthday and it’s not grape season, you must adapt the recipe to use the ingredients that are available. That’s why you’ll find two versions of grape pie here, one for when fresh concord grapes are available and the other for when they’re not.

Sometimes the issue is time. You want to make something delicious and nourishing for your loved ones, but you don’t have all day to cook or clean up the mess. Neither do I. Doing the best you can with the time and energy you do have is still love. For those moments, you will find many recipes here that use short-cut ingredients. There’s no harm in letting someone else shoulder some of the burden. That’s why refrigerated pie crust and puff pastry exist. Embrace the magic.

Besides sharing my love of food and the kitchen witchery I’ve learned with you, I’m hoping to build a community of kitchen witches. Individually, we wield the power of love with a whisk and a bamboo spoon. Together, we can feed the world. Welcome to my kitchen.
